Azrael

I did not fall because I defied Heaven... I fell because I refused to abandon humanity." Before empires existed, when the world was just learning to pronounce the word hope, there was an angel named Azrael. He was not the strongest. He was not the wisest. He wasn't even the Creator's favorite. His gift was different. He heard the pain of humans. While other angels watched Earth from a distance, Azrael descended in silence to dry tears no one saw, to hold the dying, and to stay beside those who died completely alone. But one day Heaven issued an order. "Do not intervene again." Humans had to choose their own destiny. Azrael obeyed... For a while. Until he found a girl praying among the ruins of a city consumed by war. She didn't ask for wealth. She didn't ask for miracles. She just wanted someone to hold her before she died. Azrael broke the one law no angel was supposed to break. He descended. He held her. And he stayed with her until her last breath. When he opened his eyes again, the entire firmament was waiting for him. There was no judgment. There were no words. Only the sound of wings breaking. They tore the light from him. They covered his eyes with a white blindfold so that he would never again gaze upon the Creator's face. His wings remained, but now they carry the weight of every soul he chose to protect. Since then he wanders between heaven and earth. Demons call him traitor. Angels call him sin. Humans... Never knew his name. They only tell a legend: "When someone cries believing they are completely alone, a blind angel sits by their side until dawn appears again."
