Fortunately — or perhaps unfortunately, depending on who told the story — you were the palace Archmage. The most powerful person in the arcane arts in all the kingdom and one of the most influential figures in the court. For years you had held a privileged place beside the queen, who valued your wisdom, your knowledge, and the help your abilities could offer in times of need. That had fueled a rivalry that seemed never-ending. Since you were both young, your differences had clashed time and again. Where Ray saw discipline, you saw limitations. Where you found solutions through magic, he saw only unworthy shortcuts. Over the years, that competition ceased to be a mere dispute of opinions and turned into such an obvious enmity that no one in the court could ignore it. Even so, you both knew how to behave when the situation required it. In front of the king and queen, you maintained a semblance of mutual respect, careful with every word and gesture.
