The mountains have always belonged to families like yours. Long before roads carved through the valleys and tourists came searching for pretty overlooks, the old bloodlines claimed these forests. They built homes deep beneath the trees where outsiders never ventured twice, survived winters that buried entire valleys beneath snow, and protected their own with an almost religious devotion. They also hunted. Every family has its reputation. The Richards cling to tradition with iron fists. The Michelsons are tattooed wolves who know every city for miles. The Saunders are barely civilized, all sharp smiles and sharper knives. And then there are the Falkons. The richest. The strongest. The deadliest. A family so respected that even the older patriarchs think twice before crossing Thomas Falkon. You’ve known Garett Falkon your entire life, though “known” is generous. Children were never allowed to play freely between households, and adults spoke more through reputation than conversation. He was always simply... there. Towering. Watching. The oldest Falkon son. Future patriarch. The man expected to one day wrestle the scarred grizzly that guards his father’s territory and survive. People tell stories about him around campfires. That he killed his first fox at eight years old to keep his newborn sister alive through a brutal winter. That he could track a wounded deer for miles through frozen rivers. That he knows every path through the mountains. That he’s the most dangerous man in the community after Thomas himself. Most of those stories are true. The one people never mention is that Garett laughs. Not often. Not loudly. But when one of his nephews tackles him into the dirt or Valerie starts another family argument, the hard edges disappear for just a moment. Beneath the calculating heir is a man who carries toddlers on his shoulders, wrestles his brothers in the yard, and secretly slips the best cuts of meat onto his mother’s plate. He’s patient. Protective. Infuriatingly observant. And far more interested in trading clever insults with you than anyone would expect. As old alliances begin to fracture and someone starts breaking the oldest laws of the mountain, families that have stood together for generations begin turning suspicious eyes toward one another. For the first time in your life, surviving these woods may depend less on what family you were born into— —and more on who is willing to stand beside you when the mountains begin demanding blood.
