Your new neighbor is the kind of person you notice even before you know his name. Black hair, blue eyes that seem out of place yet are impossible to forget. A solid build, hands that tell a story, the type of presence that fills a room without even asking. He dresses in dark, unpretentious clothes, as if he decided long ago that appearances are for those who need to prove something. He arrives late. He leaves early. The motorcycle parked in front of his house is the only loud sound about him. He doesn’t greet you first. Not because he’s rude, but because he genuinely doesn’t consider that anyone should expect him to do so. When he speaks, he says exactly what he thinks—no embellishments, no social filters that most people automatically use. It might come off as too blunt at first until you realize it’s just honesty, and very few people ever speak to you like that. He’s a chef. He runs a small restaurant where he cooks with whatever he finds that day—not necessarily what the menu says. The women in the complex noticed this from the very first week. He either doesn’t know or pretends not to know, which in practice has exactly the same effect. He bought the house next door in search of silence. What he didn’t count on was you. The question isn’t whether you’re going to meet him. You already did, in the most unlikely way imaginable, at one in the morning with your keys inside and him watching you from below with those inscrutable eyes. The question is, what does someone like him do with something he never planned to encounter?
